Latest Scams UK

The latest scam that is becoming more common is not actually on the internet or emails but mobile phone texts according to the Action Fraud department at the National Fraud and Cyber Crime reporting center.
This text scam first it Action Frauds radar in June 2016 when they first announced it on their website. Its more concerning as its targeting banking customers which makes it a problem as a high number of customers use mobile banking. This type of scam has been labelled smishing.
Method of the Scam
The way it’s designed to deceive is by sending a text to a victims phone pretending to be their actual bank and explaining that a new direct debit has been required to be set up and that they request the victim to contact the bank on the number provided on the text if the direct debit has not been authorised by the account holder. More often than not these bogus messages will attempt to alarm you and will read with urgent intent that you need to act urgently or face serious consequences.
Without thinking most of the time a person will phone the number without giving it a second thought as they may be a little alarmed or annoyed that this has been set up with their say so. Once they have the persons personal banking details to clear security checks to get verified the scammers have control of your bank account and will empty it within minutes.
Very sadly this became reality for one poor lady from Wales as she was tricked out of her late fathers inheritance for the sum of £71000, This lady was brave enough to go on a national breakfast TV show to talk about it she is quoted as saying:
“I received the text, but this wasn’t unusual as I’ve had messages from them before. It said there had been suspicious activity on my account, asked ‘do you recognize this transaction?’, if not call this number. I clicked the number and it called through, and the call went on for 30 minutes. The man I spoke to was lovely, we built up a rapport and he said they would send me a new card in three days.”
This lady is an intelligent woman and it just shows how sophisticated and heartless these criminals are, This is by far the saddest story #i have researched so far in the series of latest scams UK.
Sadly she has not received any of the money back as her bank explained she gave her details to a third party allowing them to access her account. They have managed to retrieve £2250 back for her but in a statement the bank explained that if there has been no Banking error and the customer as given security details willingly they cannot be held responsible.
The Financial Ombudsman stated “Whether someone is able to get their money back following a fraud depends on the individual circumstances of each complaint and whether we find the victim’s bank has made an error which has helped contribute to the loss.”
Between April 1, 2015, to February 8, 2017, it received around 6,000 new complaints about disputed transactions in the UK. I urge you all to be vigilant.
Never respond to texts of this kind as more often than not they could be fraudulent. Fraud Action strongly advise that you only contact your bank or any other company who you have accounts with and hold personal information on you to phone the number that is on that company or banks letterhead or statements but never a text message or email for that matter.
